Conductor severing operations can be highly expensive, cause major safety risks for the involved personnel and wreak havoc on the environment. Consequently, a new cutting system needed to be designed with full, remote operation and outfitted with a self jetting functionality.
Cal Dive has met these requirements with the Green Turtle.
Green Turtle is a remotely operated cutting tool developed to be lowered down onto the conductors from a vessel. Once in position, with the assist of a diver/ROV, the Green Turtle will guide itself down a conductor, jet down to target depth, cut the conductor, then retrieve the cut piece back to the surface.
The Green Turtle consists of four diamond blades that rotate and cut towards the inner center of the conductor. The blades are mounted on a sleeving ring that is powered by two electrical motors.
Green Turtle is very safe to operate as no divers need to be working near the cutting area. Having the self jetting functionality, the jetting and cutting process will be a continuous operation requiring only one deployment.
By monitoring the cutting operation and using real time visualization, the Green Turtle achieves maximum efficiency and safety.
Through the Green Turtle design — with its fully, remote operation and self jetting functionality — minimal environmental impact and CO2 emissions are realized.
